Not everyone wants to know about our history, but here goes it ............. Stephen Barnwell started an antique store in Atlanta when he was fifteen years old called Antiquish Things. This store would grow to have locations in Buckhead and Vinings and was known for its bargains on fine english and french furniture. In 2004 Antiquish Things was closed and a loft style building was bought on Collier Rd in Atlanta. Nest was born and with it came our unique take on the antiques and home decor business. We did not pussyfoot around typical retail games, but constantly brought bargains to our loyal clients. We carried everything from fine jewelry to baby to gourmet food. We were named "best of Atlanta" multiple years and featured time after time in magazines and newspaper articles. This was truly a fun place.......... Ok ok so why did we close ? Real estate baby. We got an offer we just could not pass up. So this is how we ended up in Highlands. Nest occupies the historic Gottwals house. Built in 1892' it stands proudly on a knoll overlooking Satulah Mountain across from the Baseball field. (pretty all american right?) ok, so after selling out of the family in the early 80s; a group of ladies from Atlanta opened Hanover House Antiques. I can use the word ladies because these were my friends mothers and all very fine southern women who I had known most of my life................ fast forward to our purchase of the house in 2005 and the opening of Nest. Our first year was an amazing one ;we had fun and everyone was delightful. It took some time getting used to not being in the big city, but was a welcome change. Year two was not so much fun and with it came the first signs of an economy that was getting ready to slide down the mountain. Year three was a survival idea of keeping things to a bare minimum, calling the place Highlands Antiques and rolling with the tide.......... I believe like everyone, it was just not much fun to tread water. We shuttered the place for a while trying to decide what to do; used it as our mountain home and with that time off came a new found respect for our old house and our love of retail. We are thrilled to re-open Nest for the 2011 season and hope that you will come by and at least say hello and have a look around.
Thank you.
